The narrator even implores it's young readers to go to the light and love the light of childhood and childhood beliefs as everything else is darkness and fades. I find that the beginning and middle are full of passion and build, but the end fades quickly without much fuss. However King seems to view this fromessage the depressing side of losing all the magic, vitality, and seemingly eternal hopefulness of childhood. King, coming himself from a dismal, poor small town, does an excellent job bringing to life, from a child's perspective, this bleak yet at times adventurous existence that is growing up poor in a rural town.
In my opinion this is more of a losing of childhood story, than a coming of age story. King is an exceptionally talented writer.
